Ubasute is out now!
We've released Ubasute, a short narrative game with cute 2D-pixel art and a touching story.
What's the game about?
The game is based on the Japanese practice of senicide known as "Ubasute", where people would carry their elderly parents into a mountain and leave them to die. The folklore of Ubasute has been featured in various media across history, from stage plays to films and now a video game!
Ubasute is a collaborative project between me (Andrew Kiya) and npckc, and it was made in Godot 4 over the course of nine days as part of Godot Wild Jam #70.
Some more details
This game is my first-ever finished project. And I have to say, having just only one month of Godot dev experience was quite the handicap! That being said, thanks to the lovely pixel art by my wonderful partner and a little bit of elbow grease, I think we managed to pull off a pretty good end result with a solid narrative throughline. Just ignore the one game-breaking bug! I'm planning to release an update once the game jam allows me to.
On a personal note, this game is dedicated to my grandmother, who passed away when I was 14 years old. A lot of the dialogue was influenced by the things that I wanted to say to her but never had the chance to. I also wanted to play with the concept of a "gruesome-sounding" piece of folklore and turn it on its head, instead telling a story about accepting loss and grief.
We hope you enjoy playing it, and feedback is much appreciated!
- Andrew
